Where it all began...

Writer's picture: Sadie BlackburnSadie Blackburn

I was thinking back the other day to the beginning of my book journey, and this week images from The Imaginarium writer's convention appeared on my Facebook memories. This is significant because it was at The Imaginarium that the whole thing started, in a way. 'The Imaginarium Convention (this is from their web site) is a unique event for writers and storytellers of all genres, including filmmakers, game developers, artists, musicians, poets, cosplayers, and many other creatives, and their fans. The convention features three days of extensive panel and workshop programming, an expo, a film festival, live entertainment, literary and film awards, cosplay, and much more...' My awesome friend and I first attended the Imaginarium convention in 2015. I had an amazing time at the event, meeting authors and artists and creative people of every stripe, making friends, attending workshops and panels and buying WAY too many books (naturally). By the end of the weekend I was so inspired by what I had seen and heard and learned that I began talking trash in the hotel hallway about how I was going to return the following year and attend the convention as a published author. The fact that I had not yet published a single book made this hopeful boast a tricky thing, but my friend held me to it nonetheless, and in 2016 (after something like only three weeks to spare?) I found myself seated at a table at The Imaginarium in the vendor's hall, with copies of Wild Surmise (my first published book) for sale. It taught me a lesson about dreaming big... and then following through (and the value of a good friend to make you back up your promises). Sadly, I have not had the opportunity to attend The Imaginarium again (Since 2016) , but one day I would surely love to. After twenty-three published novels, I feel I have certainly earned my place in that vendor's hall and have a variety of steampunk top hats to wear when I get there. The Imaginarium holds a special place in my heart - after all, in a way, it is where it really all began.
